The MS 40 responds to the Key velocity(4 Dynamic Curves), Aftertouch, Modulation, Pitch Bend, Portamento,Global Transposer, Octave Down, Split and Arabic Scale controls.
256 ORCHESTRAL VOICES
The superb sound generation of the MS40 comprises 256 Orchestral Voices specially created withMulti-Synthesis Technology. The sounds are sub-divided into 16families according to General MIDI standards and can be selected fromtwo separate banks. The voices have been sampled using the verylatest Pulse Code Modulation methods (PCM) to eproduce the natural'feeling' and playing techniques of each instrument.
128 USER VOICES
The 256 Internal Voices of the MS 40can be edited by means of the Attack, Decay, Release, Cut Off,Resonance, Tune, Octave and Modulation parameters. The User Voicescan be memorized in 128 internal memory locations or saved on Disk, and when in the PLAY mode perform in exactly the same way as theStandard Preset Voices, providing alternative sounds for the makingof new Programs or Patterns/ Styles.
12 DRUM SETS - 192 PERCUSSION SOUNDS
The MS 40 is provided with 11 Drum Setsand a User Drum Set with which the player can create a completely newDrum Set to his/her personal tastes using the 192 percussion soundsavailable. The User Drum Set is also used to remap the drums in theMS5, MS4 and MS3 musical backings. The percussion instruments aredivided into 7 separate groups: Bass Drum, Snare, Hi Hat, Cymbal,Toms, Hi Latin and Lo Latin. Each group is provided with independentVolume, Reverb. and Pan Pot controls and can be included or excludedwhile playing by just conveniently pressing an On/Off key.
VI 1 VIDEO INTERFACE - KARAOKE
In order to satisfy the demands forpublic and domestic entertainment, the MS 40 can be connected to anormal television set by means of the optional
VI 1 VIDEO INTERFACE.
The screen shows the Song title, thewords (which change colour as the Song goes on) and the chord name, which automatically adapts to the new key in the case of aTransposition. It is also possible to exclude the Lead Line (LEADOFF) and the words (LYRIC OFF) from the display, as well as toTranspose only the MIDI Song, leaving the keyboard in the standardtuning. A perfect balance between the backing and the part playedlive (RIGHT) can be obtained by attenuating the overall volume of thebacking by means of the Drums -/+ Volume keys. The Song can be editedby all the General MIDI parameters provided in the MS 40 (Volume,Program Change, Effects, Shift, Pan Pot, MIDI Channel) the variationsof which can be memorized in a Registration. While playing a MIDISong it is possible to 'book' the next one by means of theNEXT function and a Chain of Songs can also be programmed with amaximum of 32 Songs for non-stop live performances.
PROGRAMS
The Programs are combinations of 2 ormore keyboard voices (max. 4), of which the Volume, Chorus, Reverb.,Octave Shift, Detune, Pan Pot and Sustain On/Off parameters can beseparately controlled. Particularly rich and interesting effects areobtained when the voices are superimposed using the PATCH mode ordynamically controlled by the keyboard with the VELOCITY SWITCHfunction. DUET and TRIO harmonizing effects, as well as thepossibility to restore the original Programs (RELOAD), are alsoprovided. By means of the 4 programmable split zones it is possibleto split the keyboard into two, assigning some Program voices to theArranger section (backing effects for example) and others to the Solosection.
GENERAL MIDI
The General MIDI Standard with 16 MIDIparts and 16 separate MIDI channels is used for the MS 40. All thesounds have an 88 note range with 28 note Global Polyphony. Each MIDISong or Standard MIDI File programmed according to the General MIDIprotocol can be read and reproduced by the Disk Drive incorporated.
ARRANGER
The MS 40 is complete with 99 INTERNALSTYLES, each of which is made up of 4 Arrangements, 2 Intros, 2Endings and 3 Fill Ins. It is possible to change the single Arrangerparts (Bass, Chord 1, Chord 2 and Chord 3), modifying the ProgramChange and Volume or play the parts manually on the keyboard in theMANUAL mode. Furthermore by means of the DYNAMIC ARRANGER andRETRIGGER functions it is possible personalize the 'feeling'of your playing. The Bass is provided with some important featuressuch as the Bass to Lowest and Sustain functions and an optional MIDIPedalboard is available for those who want to use the MS 40 for organstyle playing. An exclusive feature of the Arranger is that theAccompaniment parts follow the key variations respecting the harmonicrules, adapting the intervals according to a sophisticated musicallogic, instead of just simply transposing a previously memorizedsequence.
PIANIST
This very useful feature enables anyharmony to be played on the keyboard with two hands, just as on apiano, with the Automatic Accompaniment following exactly what isplayed. The effect is obtained by pressing the optional Sustain Pedalimmediately after having formed the first chord on the keyboard. TheArrangement is then maintained in the memory for as long as the pedalis pressed.
DSP EFFECTS PROCESSOR
The MS 40 incorporates a Digital SignalProcessor (DSP) that produces various effects such as Reverb.,Chorus, Rotor, Delay, and Echo Repeat. The amount of effect can bevaried separately in all sections of the instrument and can bememorized in a Registration.
24 PATTERNS
The internal memory of the MS 40contains 24 locations into which Styles and Patterns can beprogrammed. Each Pattern can be programmed exactly as an internalstyle, with 4 Arrangements, 2 Intros, 2 Endings and 3 Fill Ins inMajor, Minor and Seventh keys. It is also possible to copy any Styleor part of a Style into a Pattern with a view to modifying theSounds, Volumes, Effects, Pan Pot or Tempo. The Patterns can easilybe saved or loaded to or from Disk either individually or in groups(Pattern Chains). A protection function called LOCK is also provided,to safeguard against unwanted cancellation of Styles already in thememory when loading new ones from the Disk.
SONG RECORDING
It is possible to play any piece ofmusic in ‘Real Time’ on the MS 40 and record it directly on Disk. The Song can be composed of a maximum of 9 MIDI parts (5 Arrangerparts and 4 Program parts) and records all the changes made on thecontrol panel of the module including the Volumes, the Tempo, theStyle, the Voices etc. When the Song is played back, it is possibleto play with the recorded sequence using any of the 256 voicesavailable.
MIDI ACCORDION
The MS 40, by means of the precise MIDI(GM) implementation included, can be controlled by a Master Keyboard,Computer, MIDI Accordion or MIDI Guitar. In particular, for the MIDIAccordion, the MS 40 has been implemented with an important functioncalled
ACCORDION.
This function enables the bestimmediate connection between the MS 40 and the MIDI Accordion. Thismeans a connection with the correct MIDI channels, the correctDynamic Curve and even the possibility to select the chord systemused (International, French or belgian).
64 REGISTRATIONS
64 Registrations can programmed inwhich it is possible to memorize the major part of the Edit functionsprovided, as well as the control panel settings. It is also possibleto memorize the situation of the 16 MIDI parts of a General MIDIStandard Song in a Registration, enabling a complete reconstruction. Each time the Song is recalled from Disk the correspondingRegistration with the new value settings is also activated.

In addition to the excellent internalsound generation, the MS 40 can also load all the PCM Voices of theSOLTON Disk Library into the internal memory: Orchestral Voices,Special Effects, Ethnic Instruments or Drum Grooves. This prerogativeopens up the MS 40 to continuous innovation and sound improvement, thereby obviating the natural obsolescence normally associated withelectronic musical instruments. The new PCM VOICES or DRUM GROOVEScan also be loaded in the MULTITASK mode; that is while you areplaying.
GROOVE AND STYLES
These are special disks in the SOLTONLibrary that contain PCM Rhythm Grooves coupled to a Style. Thanks toa special control function (SYNGROOVE), the PCM Grooves automaticallysynchronize with the internal Tempo and with the variousAccompaniment sections. In this manner Styles with a particularlypenetrating rhythm are obtained, ideal for contemporary dance music.
SEPARATE OUTPUTS
The MS 40 is provided with 4 separateoutput sockets to which the player can assign any section of theinstrument (Solo, Bass, Rhythm etc.) or even a single percussionsection (Bass Drum, Snare Drum, etc.). This characteristic is ofprime importance to those who use the MS 40 in live performances orin recording studios, as it enables the equalization or effectspatching of single sections of the module, excluding the internaleffects.
DISK LIBRARY
The new, continuously expanding, SOLTONDisk Library for the MS 40 comprises: MIDI SONGS (Words & Music)MIDI INSTRUMENTALS STYLES GROOVES & STYLES PCM VOICES The DiskLibrary created for the MS5, MS4 and MS3 used with the FD 1 DiskDrive are completely compatible with the MS 40.

Great deal for the powered mixer, and it works great. It didn't come with the little stands or the manual, but it did come with a very nice custom case to put it in. Also shipped super fast, and was packed well. Would buy from again.
